Week of June 11, 2023

Summer “Back to Basics” Sermon Series: “Who Is My Neighbor?” • It is one of the most fundamental tenets of the Christian Faith. God has commanded us to love—first and foremost, to love Him above all things, and then to love our neighbor as ourselves.  It all sounds so simple, but it isn’t always easy. The question we ask ourselves this summer as we go back to basics is, Who is our neighbor? And what does love for our neighbor look like in the world in which we live? And what makes that love so extraordinary?

Today: Introduction to “Who Is My Neighbor?” Luke 10:25-37, Leviticus 19: 13-18, Romans 12: 1-2 • An expert in the law posed the question to Jesus, “Who Is My Neighbor?” Why does it seem easier for us to articulate that we are to love everybody than it is for us to actually live it out? One reason might be that we seldom take the time as God’s people to consider just who our neighbor is.  We need the Holy Spirit to open our hearts so we allow Jesus to challenge us to a love for our neighbor that is like His, a love for all that is extraordinary, authentic, powerful, and compelling. We need the power of Jesus, the One who “neighbored” with us, to live it out.

Kids will walk away from each class with a new “God is…” statement (i.e. “God is powerful” or “God is kind”) and what it means that we are God’s people. Sunday School meets upstairs in the Family Life Center classrooms from 10:00-10:45 on Sunday mornings.
“Kid Video” every week: Did you know that DCE Eric Gerken produces a weekly kid video that ties into the Foundations of Faith lesson? Great for kids, families, and adults. Special: Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to us and “neighboring” with us: living among us, loving all of us, caring for the least of us. You have completely redeemed us among all people, and You have set us among neighbors so we can show their love to all. Help us to see all people as our neighbor, revealing to our hearts the depths of Your love. And empower us to be Your conduits of love and care. •  Bless our Vacation Bible School as we seek to touch every heart with the love of Jesus. • We ask that the Lord would send His guardian angels to watch over all those who travel during the weeks ahead. We ask the Lord to be with President Biden, members of Congress, and the Supreme Court, as well as all state and local leaders. • We ask the Lord to watch over and keep our first responders safe.

For those in the military or deployed: We pray for those who serve our nation in the armed services and for those who are deployed, especially those connected with our PoP/PdeP family: Kyle Holysz, Matthew Rojas, Amanda S, Greg S, Geoffrey W.
